Klipfontein is according to Rebelo et al (Vegetation of South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland) between the dry sandy Highveld grasslands and the rocky Highveld grassland. We form part of the Vredefort Dome World Heritage area and are blessed with 2,5 km of Vaal river.

Fire is very important and if we do not have regular controlled fire the area will convert into a savannah. Secondly winter cold is critical and all the trees in the area has adjusted to the cold.

The centre of the farm is 26° 52'42" South and 27°10' East, with an average rainfall of between 550 and 600mm per annum.

The maximum rainfall occurs in January and the minimum between June and August.

The height above sea level varies between 1350m in the lower laying areas and up to 1498m with the highest point "luiperkop".
