We selected Kalahari Reds for their natural qualities and for
functional effectiveness. The hardiness of the breed, its
excellent walking ability and good mothering attributes make it
ideally suited to the harsh conditions in large parts of South
Africa.
The ewes are fertile and produce plenty of milk and can lamb
and raise their kids in the veld. Breeders tend to select
specifically for twins, which are normally of equal strength.
The Kalahari Reds have a very long deep body, which gives
them excellent mobility with a carcass size similar to that of the
Boer goats. Our average ram weight is around 255 pounds and
that of the ewes 160 pounds. Kalahari Reds are fully pigmented
with long ears meaning they are heat resistant thus allowing
them to feed longer during the summer months.
We acquired Dikkes as our stud ram, he was most likely the
best ram in the country in 2007 and have produced some
excellent kids for us. Our latest acquisition is Tenk the 2009 National Champ, Tenk
is
definitely the most functionally correct Kalahari Red ram in
South Africa. |
